History of Galician Queimada

The queimada is one of the many rituals that have to do with fire, a tradition that is torn between pagan and mystery, a magic potion whose origins are lost in the shadows of ancestal nights plagued of meigallos and spells, of souls in pain, and rituals bodies caught by meigas who sit in darkness and in a circle around the mud pie, seeking the purification of the body and soul’s salvation while churning concoction that will scare off evil spirits and attract the good ones.

The ritual of Queimada and conxuro is one of the few rituals that remain to this day, taking place naturally in countless social gatherings and celebrations taking place in Galicia.

Queimada ingredients

  • 1 clay pot, especially for queimada
  • 1 liter of Galician grape marc
  • 1 peel of lemon or orange
  • 150 grams of sugar
  • Coffee beans



Conxuro of Galician Queimada

The ritual includes reciting the queimada conxuro, which should be read aloud as soon as the Queimada starts to burn.
